Volunteering Abroad

Many people choose to volunteer abroad during their gap year. Volunteering abroad offers a range of benefits. The main one for travel lovers is that you are getting to see a different part of the world. Yes, some of your time will be dedicated to whatever field you choose to volunteer in, however, you will have free time which you could use to explore and develop your knowledge and understanding of different cultures. It will also allow you the opportunity to meet new people from all over the world who may become lifelong friends. So whether it be a healthcare and medical volunteer program, an animal care program or even teaching abroad, you will benefit from it and also develop skills that you could use in the future.

Mountain Trekking

If you are creating an itinerary focused on physical pursuits, there are several gap year adventures you could add to your list. A great one is mountain trekking. If you are physically fit and fancy a challenge, this could be the perfect adventure for you. There are mountains around the world just waiting to be explored, from the High and Anti-Atlas Mountains trek, Morroco through to the Everest Base Camp Trek, Nepal. Choosing the right one for your ability and endurance level can be tricky. Therefore, do plenty of research in advance which will allow you to make an informed decision. You will also need to consider whether you would prefer to trek on your own or trek as part of a group with an experienced tour guide.

Au Pair

If you love children and love working with them then becoming an Au Pair in a far-flung destination could be the perfect gap year adventure for you. The first thing you need to do is choose where in the world you would like to be based. Then submit your CV to relevant agencies in that destination. The next step is to wait for potential employers to request your services. The weekly wage for an Au Pair can be quite low, often referred to as ‘pocket money’. However, it is usual for Au Pairs to live with their host family. Therefore the cost of accommodation does not have to be a worry while on placement. On your days off (this will depend on your contract) you will be able to explore your new surroundings and experience new things.

Camp Counsellor

If you have your sights set on visiting the US, then why not apply to be a camp counsellor? There are usually a few requirements when it comes to becoming a camp counsellor, the main one is age. All camps require their counsellors to be at least 18 years old and no older than 30-35. This is another opportunity where you will receive ‘pocket money’ (approximately $900 to $2000 for a nine-weeks), but again accommodation is covered together with food and drink. It is vital you like kids as you will be surrounded by them 24/7 for the duration of your contract. It’s also important to note that being a camp counsellor can be physically challenging, but the rewards and skills you develop certainly outweigh that.

Learn A New Language

A gap year is a perfect time to learn a new language. Learning a new language is a great skill to have and one that may benefit you significantly in the future, especially if you ever want to live or work in a different country. Of course, you could simply download an app and learn that way. However, actually visiting the county and living there while learning is the ideal route. There are two obvious ways of doing this. You could simply travel to your chosen country and learn that way or you could embark on a language course. There are a number of companies that offer gap year language programs that include formal lessons in a classroom setting with plenty of free time to practice your skills while living with locals.

So, if you are looking for gap year adventures, we hope this list has helped you and given you some inspiration.
