Off-roading offers the opportunity to see some fantastic sights along the backcountry.
If you’ve got experience with an ATV or a 4×4 and want to experience new adventures, you can expand your horizons with some of the best places in America to go off-roading.
Silver Lake Dunes, Michigan
The Silver Lake Sand Dunes straddle the Lake Michigan shore in the northern section of the lower peninsula on Michigan’s west coast. Tourists come from all over the globe to ride the only dunes east of the Mississippi that allow off-road vehicles.
Michigan’s dunes come in various shapes and sizes, from gentle, sloping shoulders of sand to immense white-gold vistas. You can catch some serious air bopping along the shifting landscape of its 450-acre off-road park. You can either bring your 4×4 or rent vehicles specifically designed to take on the dunes.
Moab looks almost alien with its signature red rock formations, but it is, in fact, one of the best places on Earth for outdoor adventures with expansive, wide-open spaces. The area boasts a broad and varied scenery consisting of magnificent stone arches, winding rivers, and stunning desert. The terrain may be relentless and demand intense physical and mechanical abilities. Still, if you’re willing to take on the challenge, you will be rewarded with one of the most breathtaking destinations on the planet.
Some of the best spots include Hell’s Revenge, a 14-mile trail boasting various obstacles and natural beauty of slick rock domes and the La Sal Mountains, and the Paiute, an elevated path spanning two mountain ranges views of diverse wildlife and red rock cliffs.

Rubicon Trail, California
The Rubicon Trail is one of the most famous and sought-after trails for off-roading enthusiasts. The legendary trail in the heart of the Sierra Nevada mountains inspired the Jeep series of the same name, and it’s not hard to see why. The Rubicon has breathtaking panoramic glimpses of the Sierra Nevada, fields of rocks and interconnected flat stone, and aromatic pine and fir trees.
The trail is not for the faint of heart, as many consider it to be the most challenging off-road route in the US and it will probably leave your vehicle with a few scratches and dings. Just be sure to perform some proper maintenance on your off-road vehicle in between hitting the trails to ensure you’re not getting stuck after some particularly tough driving. Once you’re there, however, you’ll be swept away by the stunning natural beauty in what might be the benchmark for all other off-road destinations.
Molokai Forest Reserve Road, Hawaii
For one of the most genuinely spectacular, serene examples of nature, you’ll need to leave the continental US and head over to the island of Hawaii. Views of Waikolu Canyon including sea cliffs, waterfalls, and plunge pools, may be seen on Maunahui Road or Main Forest Road, as well as along Molokai Forest Reserve Road. The Waikoloa Lookout and Kamakou Peak, 4,961 feet at its highest, are included in the expedition, which is part of the Kamakou Preserve.
Hopefully, if you are an avid off-road enthusiast, you get the chance to explore some of the best places in America to go off-roading. These places offer some of the most beautiful scenery in the world and can give you treasured memories that last a lifetime.
