India: What You Should Know Before You Visit the Andaman and Nicobar Islands

You don’t need a VISA to visit the Islands

Because the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are a major part of India, Indian Nationals don’t need a visa to travel there. However, foreigners are required to have a RAP (Restricted Area Permit) for them to visit the Islands. Fortunately, you can easily acquire your RAP from the Port Blair airport.

How to reach the Islands

You can only reach the chain islands by ship or flight, and the easiest way to reach the Andaman Islands is by flight. However, there’s only one airport and there are regular flights to Port Blair Airport and Veer Savarkar International Airport from cities like Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Delhi, Kolkata and Visakhapatnam. There is also a sea route to Andaman Island, which has breathtaking views, but it is more time-consuming. To reach the Islands, you can board a direct ship from Chennai to Port Blair.

When to visit the Islands

The Andaman Islands are some of the hottest places to travel, month by month between October and May. During this time, most parts of the Islands are often crowded, which means that you need to book your accommodation earlier. Alternatively, you can visit the islands before the season starts and still enjoy the place without the crowd.

The Andaman Islands offer everything that you may want during your holiday. From trekking to adventurous water sports and various tourist attractions, there are several things that you can do. Below is a list of things that you can do during your Andaman trip:

Where to stay

If you travel to the Andaman Islands during peak season, getting accommodation can be a little tricky because there is limited infrastructure and there’s hardly enough hotels. Therefore, you may want to book your accommodation about two months in advance. However, if you book your Andaman Trip with a local tour agency, then you won’t have to worry about where to stay because your tour operator will provide or be able to arrange for your accommodation.
