Switzerland: 3 Things To Keep In Mind When Visiting Zurich For The First Time

When people think of Zurich, they often think of it as a business hub rather than a tourist destination. However, it’s actually a very interesting multicultural city with a buzzing nightlife. It is also surrounded by picturesque countryside and the city has a very rich history. If you are planning a trip and you think that it might be the right city for you, here are a few tips to keep in mind when visiting Zurich for the first time.

Watch Your Budget

Zurich has a reputation as a very expensive city and that is true in a lot of cases. Many of the bars and restaurants are incredibly expensive and if you don’t watch your budget, you can easily end up spending a lot of money. However, there are some simple ways to travel on a budget in Switzerland and especially in Zurich.

Lunchtime deals are a great way to save money on food and most restaurants will offer them. If you check all of the local restaurants in the area and see when they have deals on, you can still eat out without breaking the bank.

When you are exploring the city, you should walk as much as possible because it’s free. The streets are filled with interesting architecture and taking a stroll is the best way to experience it.

Getting Around

Although walking is a great way to get around the city, you still need faster ways to get around sometimes. You could consider hiring a car and renting parking at Zurich airport so you can have it ready for when you arrive. This means that you don’t have to worry about airport transfers and public transport. However, if you don’t want to bother with driving, you should get a Zurich Pass. This gives you free airport transfers and access to a lot of the Zurich exhibition halls as well.

Where To Visit

Zurich is filled with plenty of sights to see, but if you are only there for a short time, you won’t be able to pack it all in. Altstadt is a must for anybody that is visiting Zurich for the first time. This beautiful old town area has lots of nice places to go shopping and you can visit a lot of traditional places of worship as well. The winding streets and quaint old buildings make it perfect for exploring on foot.

After exploring the city for a while, you should get out to Uetliberg, Zurich’s very own mountain. You can reach it easily by train or by driving, and it’s a relatively easy climb to the top where you will get some incredible views of the city. You can also take a nice walk around the picturesque Lake Zurich. There are lots of nice parks around the edge of the lake, especially the impressive Chinese garden.

Zurich is a great city but it can be incredibly expensive if you don’t plan your trip well. However, if you take advantage of the nice countryside areas around the city and search out the cheap deals, you can still have an amazing trip without spending lots of money.
